Burritos are really special to me because I started cooking them when I was five. It is the first meal I learned to cook on my own. All my dad would do is turn on the stove and I would do the rest.
I browned and seasoned the meat, chopped the lettuce, grated the cheese, warmed the tortillas and set the table. Setting the table was had been one of my responsibilities for over a year. I had been warming the tortillas for a while. And my dad taught me how to chiffonade lettuce when I was four. This time was the first time I did everything by myself.
It wasn’t all easy. While cooking the ground beef, my stool slipped and I fell. I tried to catch myself on the counter, but I hit the pan which was really hot and burned my right arm which is the arm I cook with. My dad had been watching me cook and my parents took care of me.
My dad always jokes, “Rub some dirt on it.” It hurt, but I did not give up. So my mom wrapped my arm in an ace bandage and I kept on cooking. I finished the meal all by myself. Now I cook dinner for my family by myself one night a week.
